This loss is deeply felt across the fisheries, scientific, and maritime communities, and most profoundly in Gloucester, a city where the ocean is not just a livelihood, but family, history, and identity. Those who work on the water understand the weight of heading out before dawn, the hope carried with every trip, and the quiet worry that lives alongside pride until a safe return home.

Jada was aboard the Lily Jean because she believed deeply in the work she was doing. She relocated to Massachusetts to pursue fisheries science and observing, dedicating her academic path and early career to protecting marine resources and supporting sustainable fisheries. She embraced her role not only as a scientist, but as a working member of the crew.

Observing requires resilience, professionalism, courage, and trust, trust in the crew, the vessel, and the shared commitment to return safely.

We are grateful for the extraordinary efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, first responders, and local and state officials who conducted an extensive and tireless search under extremely difficult conditions. Their professionalism, determination, and care reflect the deep respect held for those who work at sea and for the families waiting on shore.

This tragedy ripples far beyond one vessel. It reverberates through docks, homes, classrooms, and generations of fishing families. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jada’s family and the families of the crew during this heartbreaking time.
